July 4th Safety Tips

Dog and woman on a picnic blanket for July 4th

Did you know? July 4th is one of the busiest days for shelters because so many pets are terrified of the noise from fireworks, parties or unfamiliar settings and run away out of fear.

With the 4th fast approaching, how can you keep your pets safe and stress free?

  1. Walk them during the day. Make sure they get out some energy in a safe and familiar way.  Keep to your normal schedule as much as possible.
  1. Create a safe space for them in a bedroom or a room that can be closed off so they have a cozy space and cannot escape.
  1. Cue the classical tunes. Some classical music can help soothe a nervous pet as well as masking unfamiliar noises.
  1. Raise a glass safely. Make sure that there is no alcohol in reach if you are at or hosting a celebration.
  1. Keep your eyes peeled. Be aware of how your pet is reacting to their surroundings and stimuli and give them reassurance and quiet attention as needed.
  1. Make a safe splash. If you go in the water or on a boat, use a life jacket even if they are good swimmers.
  1. Double check their ID. Make sure they have ID tags on their collar or are microchipped, just in case they get lost.

These tips should help you and your pet have a safe and enjoyable holiday!
